The translation appears. You find something that sounds good. Then another question comes up: which line on the menu was that?

It is a small problem, but it changes what a useful translation screen needs to do. Translating the words is one task. Helping someone connect those words to the thing in front of them is another.

We develop TransHero at EMYSTI, a software company in Japan. It brings text, voice, conversation and photo/menu translation into one app. This article looks at the handoff between reading a photo and having a conversation, using the photo mode shown on our official site.

Keep the original within reach

A menu is more than a block of text. There are headings, prices, short notes and choices arranged around one another. A reader may want one particular item, not a translation of the page as a whole.

TransHero's photo mode connects numbered regions on the image with a translated list. The number gives the reader a way back to the original position. Instead of remembering where an unfamiliar phrase appeared, they can look between the image and the corresponding translation.

The useful question is simple: after reading a translated entry, can someone find it again in the original? That matters when pointing at an item, comparing two options or asking a member of staff about one line.

Reading is often the beginning of an exchange

Imagine that a translated item catches your attention, but you want to ask when it is available. The photo has helped you understand what is there. Now the task is to say something that is not on the page.

This is where text translation can be useful. You can compose the question at your own pace, translate it, then show it or use it in a message. A short sentence is enough: the item you mean and the detail you want to know.

When someone is standing in front of you, speaking may be a more comfortable next step. TransHero also includes voice and conversation translation, with live interpreting modes available for supported language pairs. The choice of format follows the exchange: a photo for the printed words, text for a question you want to prepare, or voice when you are ready to speak.

Give the reader a next action

A translation result should not feel like a dead end. The photo mode shown on our site includes ways to read text aloud, copy it and save the image. These are modest actions, but each serves a different need.

Reading aloud can help someone hear a phrase. Copying gives them text they can use elsewhere. Saving lets them return to the material. The point is not to make everyone use every control. It is to leave a sensible next step available after the words have been translated.

For a first try, choose a short piece of ordinary text. Look at the original and the translated list together. Find the line you care about. Then think about the question you would actually ask next. That is a more useful introduction than testing an app only with isolated sentences.

Start with the situation, not a list of features

The same person may need several kinds of language help within a few minutes. They read something, form a question, listen to an answer and check a detail. A product introduction becomes clearer when it follows those actions in order.

TransHero offers 20 selectable translation-language options, counting Simplified and Traditional Chinese separately, and six interface languages. Its official site has the current iOS and Android store links and a direct Android download.

If you would like to explore the app, start with a menu, a message or a short question that matters to you today:
